IPOTOCATICAC

INTERVIEW

How was the approach to psychedelic trance?

I discovered trance when I was in my twenties, around 2002, in my little city in North of France. A team of happy freaks was running a bar (Le Globe!) where you could listen to trance Wednesday to Saturday. This team organised parties in forest, in quarries or caves. Thanks to Fifi who makes me discover dark trance in his mechanical sets! I started to produce my own trance around 2006, and I released my first EP in 2009 on D-A-R-K Records.

Why is your project called Ipotocaticac?

I started Ipotocaticac with a friend, Etienne aka MacManus. One day, Etienne brought some chamanic samples : sounds of nature, percussions, traditional instruments, and the voice of a man speaking a strange language. At a moment, the guy says "Ipotocaticac". "Great! it's a perfect name for our project!" You can ear this sound in our first track, "Ipotocaticac"https://youtu.be/F3nxabssIY8

I discovered later that the man speak Nahuatl, a language of the Uto-Aztecan language family. You can find the word "Ipotocaticac" in this text : https://archive.org/stream/ancientnahuatlpo12219gut/12219-8.txt

Dear mexican friends, maybe somebody can help me to discover the exact meaning of "Ipotocaticac"?

What festivals will you remember forever?

I don't go and play very often in festival... But my best memory is the World People Festival 2012, "Back to Pirates", in south of France. GREAT Energy! I never forget Atriohm finishing his set with this crazy track : https://youtu.be/pScfd5PnKso .

The breack at 4'20 with the voice was a shock, it confirmed what I love in psytrance.

I composed this track for "Back to Pirates":

Tell me about your new album The Mirror Of The World?

This album is my first album, and it celebrates the 10 years of Ipotocaticac. Before i produced 6 EPs, 3 on D-A-R-K Records and 3 on Atomes Music. As the description of the album in Bandcamp says, "This album synthesizes 10 years of the creative journey of the yellow sengi, and always evolving music and inspirations.
As always he likes to play with Psytrance codes, strong and driving kick-bass, crazy synths and deep atmospheres merged with his own references and tastes, giving you an original and narrative take on trance music.
Those 9 tracks perfectly represent his own style and will offer you new episodes of a story that talks to the dancing body, to the dreaming mind."

How has the result of your project been since it started?

In 10 years, 6 EPs, 1 album, around 80 gigs... I enjoyed beautiful trips, and I met a lot of nice persons... And I can't wait to play in Mexico!

What are the influences of Ipotocaticac?

All music but specialy experimental stuff... I love jazz, 20th century classical music (Stockhausen, Berio, Ligeti...), electronica, ethnic music...
